Mercy & Unity Hospitals’ Foundation Raises More for Community Services

COON RAPIDS, Minn. 04/28/2006--Medical technology, automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) for Anoka County first responders and medical and nursing scholarships are examples of how Mercy & Unity Hospitals’ Foundation spends the money raised from donors and special events.  In 2005, the foundation raised $983,573, a 50 percent increase over 2004.

“It is because of your generosity that Mercy & Unity Hospitals continue to be an integral part of our community, providing the highest level of care to our neighbors,” Jim Amundson, chairman of the foundation’s board of directors, told board members at the annual meeting April 26 at Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn Park.

Amundson, who is in his second year as chair, said his experience on the foundation board has been “one of the most rewarding aspects of my community service.”   Board member Doris Schulte of Coon Rapids received special recognition at the meeting for her leadership of the successful “Heart of the Community” Capital Campaign.  The campaign completed the purchase of a $2.7 million Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Angiography (MRI) technology.  Also, the foundation awarded more than $400,000 in grants to hospital programs and community initiatives.

Other board members are Keith Boulais, Scott Bromley, Louise Cottrell, Chris Gorham, Pam Deal, Justine Grow, Paul Kettler, M.D., Jamie Kveton, Tracy Peck, Amin Rahmatullah, M.D., Jerry Seeman, Karen Strauman-Raymond, Jerry Teeson, and Stewart Wilson.

Mercy & Unity Hospitals, located in Coon Rapids and Fridley, are non-profit hospitals that serve the northern Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Mercy & Unity respond to a wide range of health care needs with specialty services including bariatric weight-loss surgery, behavioral health, cardiac care, emergency, oncology, orthopedics, neurosciences and women’s and children’s services. The hospitals, which are part of Allina Hospitals & Clinics, are located on the Internet at www.mercyunity.com.
