Mercy and Unity Hospitals Announce Physician Leadership AwardsFRIDLEY, Minn. 11/13/2006--Physicians at Mercy and Unity hospitals honored two colleagues for clinical excellence and community service recently. Donald Collins, MD, received Mercy Hospital’s Richard C. Travis, MD, Physician Leadership Award, and John Stoltenberg, MD, received Unity Hospital’s William J. Carr, MD, Physician Leadership Award. The awards were announced at the Physician Recognition Dinner and Awards Ceremony held Saturday, Nov. 11 at Edinburgh Golf Club. Also honored were 20 physicians who have served on the Mercy and Unity hospitals’ Medical Staff for 25, 30, 35 and 40 years. The hospitals have about 875 active physicians.
Donald Collins, MD, received Mercy Hospital’s Richard C. Travis, MD, Physician Leadership Award. About Dr. CollinsDonald Collins, MD, of Andover, Minnesota is an obstetrician and gynecologist and has practiced at Mercy and Unity hospitals for 21 years. He has held numerous leadership roles, including chief of staff and medical executive council chair. Dr. Collins is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and continues to serve patients at the RiverWay Clinic in Coon Rapids. Originally from Minneapolis, Dr. Collins initially pursued a career as a scientist and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston where he received an electrical engineering degree. However, he became interested in medicine and attended medical school at Duke University where he completed internships in pediatrics and internal medicine. He served as a general medical officer with the Indian Health Service in Oklahoma for three years. Then, he completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Dr. Collin’s community involvement includes serving as planning and zoning commissioner for the city of Anoka and his church’s budget and finance coordinator and head of trustees. He and his wife, Nora, have been married for 32 years and have three children and one grandchild. About Dr. Stoltenberg
John Stoltenberg, MD received Unity Hospital’s William J. Carr, MD, Physician Leadership Award. John Stoltenberg, MD, of Wayzata, Minnesota is a surgeon and has practiced at Mercy and Unity hospitals for 27 years. He is vice-chair of Surgical Specialties for both Mercy and Unity and medical director of Surgery at Unity. In addition, he serves as an assistant clinical professor for the Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota. He has served as president of Minnesota General Surgeons, president and board member of the Minneapolis Surgical Society and Preferred One Physicians Associates, and a member of the executive committee of Minnesota Specialty Physicians. He is currently a member of the American College of Surgeons, Hitchcock Surgical Society, Minneapolis Surgical Society, Minnesota Medical Association and the Hennepin County Medical Society. Dr. Stoltenberg was born in Madison, South Dakota and grew up in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. He attended St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota and earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He completed his internship and residency in general surgery at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Dr. Stoltenberg has written numerous publications and given presentations to health-care organizations on surgery-related topics. He and his wife, Jennifer, have been married for 35 years and have three children. Mercy and Unity are non-profit hospitals that serve the northern Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.
