River Falls Area Hospital Foundation Awards Scholarships

RIVER FALLS, Wisc.  06/14/2010--The River Falls Area Hospital Foundation’s recent scholarship awards will help six local non-traditional students pursue their studies in health care.

At a reception on Monday, June 7, $500 scholarship checks were presented to Tanya Beyer (Spring Valley), Karissa Dougherty (Ellsworth), Kirsten Imrie (River Falls), Laura Koester (River Falls), Kelly Ottem (River Falls) and James Plummer (River Falls). Beyer, Doughterty and Kosester are working towards a registered nursing degree at Chippewa Valley Technical College; Imrie and Ottem are working on a bachelors of science in nursing at Augsburg College; Plummer is working on a doctorate in physical therapy at St. Catherine’s University.

“We know that the cost of education can be a barrier, especially for students who start their schooling later in life,” said Heather Logelin, executive director of the foundation. “They often have families to support and other significant financial obligations. The recipients of these most recent scholarships are all very committed to providing high-quality health care in Western Wisconsin. We are proud to be helping them pursue their dreams, and hope our scholarship program encourages more people from our region to consider careers in health care.”

The goal of the Foundation’s Health Careers Scholarship Program for Non-Traditional Students is to increase the number of health care providers practicing in the region served by the hospital. In selecting award recipients, preference is given to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to practice in the region. Other factors that favorably influence selection include a work history in a hospital, clinic or other medical setting; demonstrated financial need; and demonstrated potential for academic success.
