Free heart health screenings at area events
COON RAPIDS, FRIDLEY, Minn. 07/22/2009--The Wellness Van, a community benefit of Allina's Mercy and Unity hospitals and the 5M7 Lion's and Lioness Clubs, offers free health screening for area residents. A screening includes a questionnaire, blood pressure check, cholesterol blood test, glucose and body mass index (BMI). The tests do not require fasting.
Within a few minutes after the screening, a health professional reviews the test results privately with each person and explains the risks for diabetes, heart disease, peripheral artery disease (PAD) and stroke.
"This health screening is a very convenient way to learn if you are at risk and if you should seek out a health improvement program or a physician," said Brenda Link, Wellness Program coordinator for Mercy and Unity hospitals. "We provide educational materials and refer persons for additional testing if the screening indicates the need for further medical attention," Link says.
Children ages 10 to 17 are encouraged to participate in the screening.
